There were pancakes a-plenty at the Park Avenue Church Pancake Bonanza on Saturday 18th February, with all events accompanied by pancake themed quiz, video and music!
First up was the traditional pancake race, with junior participants concentrating hard to keep their pancakes in their pans. Fraser Lewis managed to cross the finish line first, with his pancake still (just about) intact.
The adult pancake race was more of a stampede, with competitors charging across the church hall in a bid to be crowned the winner. Mike Johnson managed to triumph amongst the chaos.
The pancake gobble game followed, as the name suggests, those with healthy appetites were required to eat a whole pancake as quickly as they could.
Two adults and two children dared to take the challenge and Graham Kinnersly was a clear winner, managing to gorge his pancake down in just 45 seconds. His winning tactic appeared to be pouring lemon juice neat from the bottle into his mouth to aid digestion.
The junior winner, Fred Wolfenden, was rather more refined in his pancake gobbling, opting for one big bite at a time to take 1st place.
Next up was the pancake relay; with three teams lined up to carefully pass their pancake from pan to pan. I can assure you this is not as easy as it sounds and spectators were wincing as many a tasty pancake dropped onto the floor!
No pancake themed event would be complete without the pancake toss and judge Steve Richardson had to observe from the hall balcony due to the sheer height of the throws. The winner was Mike Johnson, whose gravity defying toss was clinched with an impressive mid-air, back handed catch.
The junior pancake toss saw pancakes flying off in all directions, but Nathan Craddock managed to flip his pancake to the greatest heights.
The bonanza finished with a pancake feast and a good helping of sugar and lemon!
